How to Use Keywords in Blog Posts

If you’re posting to your blog as a form of therapy or to simply entertain long-distance family members, understanding how keywords work won’t matter much. But if you plan to earn a little income off your blog, or want to reach a few thousand visitors a day, you definitely want to implement keywords into each and every blog post

Things You'll Need

  • Internet connection
  • Keyword tools
  • Blog

Instructions

Obtain a better understanding of how keywords work. Before you can begin using keywords in your posts, you need to understand how keywords work and how search engines use them. When you write a post, the idea is to stick to one main theme so that your readers know what your subject is and can follow along. Keywords work the same way. Choosing a set of words to use in a single post tells the search engines what your post is about, which in turn allows others to find you.

List words related to the theme of your blog. Before you start working on your blog, consider the audience you want to attract, and list words that you think will be of interest to your audience. Then use a keyword search tool (see Resources below) to help you determine which words will give you the best results when people do a search for that information.

Write naturally, and insert keywords sparingly. When you write your blog post, write as though you’re talking to a colleague. Say what needs to be said without worrying about keywords or where they should be placed within your content. Once you’ve written your content, go back and replace a few of the generalized terms with your keywords.

Avoid overcrowding your content. Use just enough keywords for the search engines to know what you’re talking about, but not so much that your readers get lost in a sea of keywords and lose interest. Your keywords should only take up about 3 to 5 percent of the words used in your post.

Use keywords in the coding of your blog. While blogging software makes it easy to post your thoughts online, taking the time to understand some of the more basic elements of your blog’s code can help you improve your rankings in the search engines and drive more traffic to your blog naturally. Use your keywords in your post’s meta tags (title, description, keywords) and in your post’s tag line (tags help optimize your blog’s search feature, but also help with the main search engines). And don’t forget to give your post a unique address using your main keyword (use post slug option).

Use keywords prominently. Your keyword should be included in the title of your post as well as the first paragraph of your post, then again in a few of your subheadings.
